Atlantic art of living
Arcachon, bay side
One hour from Bordeaux, the bay changes the pace: oyster huts, pinasses, Winter Town villas, pale sand and ocean light.
Between pines, oyster huts and water light, the bay sets a slower rhythm.
From Les Pénates, Arcachon works beautifully as a car-free day trip or as a freer outing by car or bike. The key is not to do everything: the bay is best enjoyed with just a few stops, real pauses and a close eye on tide, boat and train times.
We recommend a simple day around central Arcachon, the Winter Town, a boat trip towards Île aux Oiseaux and the Dune du Pilat. Biganos, Le Teich and Gujan-Mestras are worth exploring too, but they are easier with a car, an e-bike or a longer day.
Moment I
Arcachon without a car, by train and on foot
Take tram D to Bordeaux Saint-Jean station, then the TER train to Arcachon. The journey takes about 50 minutes and brings you straight into the town centre, making the outing very easy from the house.
From Arcachon station, walk down to Jetée Thiers and the seafront, then climb towards Parc Mauresque and the Winter Town. This is the most beautiful neighbourhood to explore on foot, with 19th-century villas, quiet streets and the Sainte-Cécile observatory.
Good pace: morning walk, lunch in the centre or by the seafront, then boat trip or Dune du Pilat depending on the weather.
Moment II
Oyster huts, Île aux Oiseaux and bay light
From Jetée Thiers, a guided boat trip around Île aux Oiseaux lets you see the Cabanes Tchanquées, oyster parks and Cap Ferret's oyster villages without needing a car.
The full loop takes about two hours with Union des Bateliers Arcachonnais. Check timetables before leaving, especially off season or when the weather looks uncertain. For lunch, stay central for simplicity or continue to L'Aiguillon for a more oyster-harbour atmosphere.
Worth knowing: oyster huts mainly serve oysters, prawns, whelks and white wine. You go for freshness, views and simplicity.
Moment III
Dune du Pilat, finish facing the ocean
From Arcachon station, the Baïa bus reaches the Dune du Pilat in about 25 minutes depending on the season and timetable. The climb is short but calls for proper shoes, water, a hat and sunglasses.
At the top, the view takes in Banc d'Arguin, the Atlantic and the Landes forest. If you still have energy, finish with a drink at La Co(o)rniche in the late afternoon; otherwise, simply take the bus back to Arcachon, then the TER to Bordeaux.
There is no shade or water point at the top of the dune: avoid the hottest hours in summer.
Good to know
- Without a car
- Focus on central Arcachon, the Winter Town, the boat trip around Île aux Oiseaux and the Dune du Pilat. This is the smoothest train-friendly plan.
- With a car or bike
- Biganos, Le Teich, Gujan-Mestras and the oyster ports become easier to include, especially if you want to taste oysters by the water.
- Bookings
- Check TER, Baïa and boat schedules before leaving. In high season, book the Île aux Oiseaux boat trip as early as possible.
