The pool & garden

A living garden around the pool.

Shared by guests in the five rooms, the pool is open from 10 am to 8 pm and heated from mid-May to mid-September. Depending on the weather, we may extend the season by opening a little earlier in spring or keeping it open later into autumn.

The flower-filled garden surrounding it bears Maria Luisa’s signature. A keen horticulturist, she grows flowers, herbs, trees and carefully chosen plants to create a true ecosystem, welcoming birds and insects as well as guests.

Sun loungers and a hammock invite you to read, rest or simply enjoy time outdoors after a day in Bordeaux.

Your hosts

Maria Luisa, Sylvain and Monsieur Pompon.

Originally from Sicily, Maria Luisa has an international career as an orchestral conductor and pianist. She speaks French, Italian, English, German and Spanish, and her passions for cooking and horticulture inspired the living garden around the pool, where vegetables, herbs, flowers and trees welcome birds and insects.

After fifteen years in tech entrepreneurship, Sylvain opened Les Pénates in 2020. A wine enthusiast, traveller, heritage and history lover and accomplished chess player, he is always happy to share his favourite addresses, vineyard routes and personal Bordeaux.

Monsieur Pompon, a lop-eared rabbit and the garden mascot, completes the household. A fruit thief and Instagram star, he occasionally makes an appearance with a few acrobatic leaps.

Art & culture

A house that makes room for creativity.

Art and music are part of life at Les Pénates. Maria Luisa teaches piano here, and the house occasionally hosts rehearsals or intimate concerts in the lounge or garden.

The entrance hall displays works by local street artists Jofo, Mr Poulet and Fred Rush Collin. For a special event, the house can also become a temporary gallery or meeting place.
